Firefighters fight fire at local scrapyard

ASHTABULA ó Passers-by called city firefighters to a local scrapyard Monday night.
When firefighters arrived at Ashtabula Iron and Metal Co., 1015 W. 30th St., they discovered a smoldering fire, according to the Ashtabula Fire Departmentís report. Upon closer examination, firefighters realized they were fighting a deep-seated fire in a large pile of metal shavings, the report said.
Ashtabula Iron and Metal officials also responded and used their heavy equipment to disperse the metal shavings, while the fire department used an aerial ladder to spray water on the flames.
West Avenue was closed to traffic for about three hours because of the smoke and fire. Firefighters said it took about 125,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze.
No one was injured.
