Norfolk & Southern Coal Dock Fire in Ashtabula
From the office of Chief Pristera 2008-08-05
Units of the Ashtabula Fire Department (AFD) were called to the Norfolk & Southern Coal loading facility in Ashtabula this morning at approximately 0540 hrs. Arriving units found fire in the coal loading silo’s and began immediate fire suppression operations.
This area of the facility is not served by fire hydrants so water was pumped from the Ashtabula River. To increase water capacity a tanker shuttle operation was also established. At the peak of fire suppression operations approximately 3000 gallons of water per minute were flowing onto the fire.
The last units left the scene at approximately 1215.
In all six engines, two aerials, two tankers and approximately 40 firefighters were needed to extinguish the fire. Ashtabula Township, Saybrook Township, Geneva Fire, Plymouth Township and Conneaut all supplied firefighters and apparatus.
The USCG supported the operation by controlling boat traffic on the river.
No one was injured during the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Additional information will be released as it becomes available.
